Photo Tip – Keep Your Memories Safe

We live in a digital world.  A lot of our lives are wrapped up in data stored on various computers.  This is especially true with respect to our photography.  Digital cameras have added a lot of advantages to our hobby and introduced a lot of “snapshooters” to more advanced camera settings with which they previously would not have been comfortable.  Read more

Photo Tip – Shooting eBay Photos that Sell

Did you know that the quality of your pictures can influence whether or not an eBay auction receives any bids?  It can also affect the final selling price.  The pictures you use for your auction are the only real representation of your product, and if there are others selling the same item, your photos can determine which auction receives the Read more

Photo Tip – Checking your Sensor

How to Check if Your Sensor Needs Cleaning: Since digital image sensors don’t move in your camera the way film did, dust is a much bigger problem for today’s digital SLR than it ever was for a film camera. Today’s cameras have auto-cleaning sensors but, while helpful, these systems will only lengthen the time between manual sensor cleanings. Read more

Photo Tip – Shooting Snow Scenes

Winter Snow in Michigan can make for some of our most beautiful photographic images.  There are a couple of things to keep in mind when shooting snow scenes, the most important of which is exposure.  Experienced photographers will tell you that you can’t always trust your camera’s light meter.  When shooting a scene that is mostly white your meter will Read more

Photo Tip – Digital Storage & Printing

  • ALWAYS MAKE TWO COPIES of your images for long term storage.  Hard drives crash and CD/DVD’s get scratched.
  • If you want your prints to look like what you see on your monitor you must calibrate your monitor.
  • Traditional photographic prints are still the best way to archive your printed images.  And quite often they cost less than you can do at home.

Photo Tip – Basic Shooting

  • Always shoot at the highest quality setting your camera allows.  You can easily downsize but can’t add what isn’t there.
  • Learn when to take control of your camera’s flash.  This is not always as cut and dry as you might think – and sometimes Auto is the best setting.
  • Keep a small tripod handy.  Even with larger cameras there are portable options that will support some weight.

Photo Tip – Memory Cards

  • Make sure your camera is off when installing or removing a card.
  • Format cards often after transferring your pictures to their permanent home on your computer or discs.
  • Do not use cards in more than one camera without reformatting the card in the new camera.
  • Keep a spare card or two.  Accidentally deleted images can usually be recovered, provided you DON’T TAKE MORE PICTURES ON THE CARD.

Photo Tip – Camera Care

  • Keep the outside of your camera as clean as possible.  This is especially important for interchangeable lens SLR cameras.
  • Keep your pocket point-and-shoot digital in a case.  Broken LCD’s from cameras in purses and bags are our 2nd most common repair.
  • Check SLR sensor for dust periodically.  Some cameras have a menu option.  If not, we will cover how to take a dust reference photo in a later post.
