Redtailed Hawk3413About the Instructor: John is a professional photographer in West Michigan. He lectures on photography and is frequently called upon to judge photography competitions. His knowledge about professional photographic lighting focuses his attention on the quality and direction of light and he applies the same principles when photographing nature. He also has a keen eye for compositional elements and how to apply them in the photograph.

His love for nature has helped him to become a self taught naturalist. John and fellow photographer, Ed Post, have been presenters for the PSA International Convention last year in Portland, Oregon and this year in West Yellowstone, Wyoming. John and Ed have lead a very successful workshop at Turkey Run State Park in Indiana for the past 11 years. John has also teamed up with The Outdoor Discovery Center to lead photography tours to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington and the deserts Southern Arizona.

Class Description: This workshop will begin with classroom instruction at The Outdoor Discovery Center education building. The instruction will be directed to “how to photograph nature (especially birds). John will discuss light, apeture and composition. All instruction is accompanied with a digital presentation full of examples. john will also share some his tips that he has found to be very helpful in creating the optimum photograph. The second part of this workshop will be actually photographing birds of prey in outdoor settings.

John has carefully placed perches in natural locations that give the best backgrounds. This is a great opportunity to photograph birds such as a Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk,  Peregrine Falcon, Merlin, American Kestrel, Great-horned Owl, Gray and Red Screech Owl or Barred Owl. This is your opportunity to get those photographs that are seen in nature magazines.

Lodging Details: This workshop is scheduled so that most participants will have ample time to return home on Saturday. For those that this will not work, Holland, Michigan has many lodging facilities. A list of them is available on request.
