About the Instructor: Bob has been working as a designer and photographer for over thirty years. He believes his liberal arts training shows in his eclectic imaging styles. Bob was also quick to embrace the possibilities of the computer and imaging. He purchased his first computer in 1986 and has never looked back.
“With the eyes of a child” is a predominant theme in Bob’s approach to his work as an artist. Bob tries to maintain a spirit of wondering and playfulness when encountering his photographic subjects. In recent years his workshops on creativity and digital imaging have been popular among local arts organizations.
Bob has enjoyed participating in several Artist-in-Residence programs — 2005 at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, 2006 at Acadia National Park, 2007 at Petrified Forest National Park, and 2009 at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Michigan’s upper peninsula. Bob is a great believer in life-long learning and has participated in workshops with noted photographers Freeman Patterson, John Paul Caponigro, Stephen Johnson, and Ernst Haas.
He makes his home in Petoskey, Michigan where there is plenty of natural inspiration. “I’m always open to new subjects and new places, but Northern Michigan is my first love.”

I’m interested in these workshops, but need a definition of the term “intermediate”. What skills and/or background should an “intermediate” student have? Does “intermediate” imply that the potential student should first have completed one of your beginner workshops?
Thanks for the info.
Caroline Cochran
Hi Caroline
No prerequisites as far as our workshops.
In general I’d say an intermediate photographer is:
• Someone who has at least 2 – 3 years of participating in photography in a manner that is more than just taking snapshots (Photography is a craft or art form that they take seriously)
• Someone who is pretty well versed in the operation of their camera (only refers to their users manual occasionally). eg. They know the relationship of f-stop (aperture) to shutter speed to sensor sensitivity (ISO settings)
• And in this digital world, is comfortable on the computer and has some basic skills using image manipulation software to enhance their images.
