Instructor’s Name: Robert deJonge
About the Instructor: Bob has been working as a designer and photographer for over thirty years. He received a college degree in art, taking a special interest in the relationship of all art genre and also in the history of art and architecture. He believes his liberal arts training shows in his eclectic imaging styles. Bob was also quick to embrace the possibilities of the computer and imaging. He purchased his first computer in 1986 and has never looked back.
“With the eyes of a child” is a predominant theme in Bob’s approach to his work as an artist. Bob tries to maintain a spirit of wondering and playfulness when encountering his photographic subjects. In recent years his workshops on creativity and digital imaging have been popular among local arts organizations.
Bob has enjoyed participating in several Artist-in-Residence programs — 2005 at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, 2006 at Acadia National Park, 2007 at Petrified Forest National Park, and 2009 at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Michigan’s upper peninsula. Bob is a great believer in life-long learning and has participated in workshops with noted photographers Freeman Patterson, John Paul Caponigro, Stephen Johnson, and Ernst Haas.
He makes his home in Petoskey, Michigan where there is plenty of natural inspiration. “I’m always open to new subjects and new places, but Northern Michigan is my first love.”

Class Description: Getting to know your subjects — whether natural, human, or human creations — through research, observation, and listening, and then developing a photographic approach that is appropriate. So often we get excited about using a new technique we’ve learned or a style we’ve seen someone else use and we let the techniques and styles dictate the look and feel of our work. But the subject we’re shooting has a story to tell and maybe, just maybe, that story should determine the techniques and styles we use. We’ll start with examples of what visual storytelling looks like, and discover ways to make that happen in your own work.
